Housing Loan Program

The AUP Housing Loan Program, launched in September 2005 in partnership with Bangladesh Bank’s Grihayan Tahbil Fund, aims to provide affordable, long-term, low-interest loans to transform substandard housing into durable brick-and-mortar homes for low-income families in areas like Chandpur and Cumilla. With a mission to ensure a "solid roof over every Bangladeshi head," the program has delivered 784 homes, each supported by a Tk 130,000 loan cap, and has 240 more under construction for completion next fiscal year. Beyond shelter, it promotes health, hygiene, and community pride, aligning with the government’s “Housing for All” initiative. The program’s rigorous oversight, managed by a single Bangladesh Bank officer, ensures transparency and fairness in fund allocation, prioritizing families in dire need. Stories like the Rahman family’s in Cumilla highlight its impact, turning precarious living conditions into stable, dignified homes.

The AUP Housing Loan Program, initiated in September 2005, partners with Bangladesh Bank’s Grihayan Tahbil Fund to offer low-interest, long-term loans, enabling low-income families in regions like Chandpur and Cumilla to replace fragile mud-and-tin or bamboo shelters with sturdy brick homes. Emphasizing housing as a right, the program has built 784 homes, each funded by loans up to Tk 130,000, with 240 additional homes slated for completion next fiscal year. These homes enhance health, hygiene, and comfort, providing stability and pride for families previously vulnerable to leaks and storms.

More than construction, the program transforms lives. Families once crowded in unsafe, leaky structures now enjoy secure, dry homes, as exemplified by the Rahman family in Cumilla, who moved from a bamboo shack to a concrete home in 2023, allowing their children to sleep soundly through monsoons. AUP’s focus on fairness ensures loans reach the neediest, with Bangladesh Bank’s single project officer managing rigorous oversight of funds through site visits, spreadsheets, and bank statements. This initiative supports the government’s “Housing for All” goal, proving that stable housing fosters dignity and resilience, one home at a time.
